Our Approach to Therapy

At True To You Therapy, we utilize a variety of approaches to help your child reach milestones, gain independence and learn new skills - all while having fun!

Our approaches include-

  • Play-based approach: Children’s brains are actually wired to learn best through play! We utilized play to engage your child and work on skills through activities that are motivating to them. So, while it may appear that the therapist is “just playing” with your child, know that it is always functional play with a therapeutic purpose! Our goal is that your child enjoys coming to therapy and wants to engage in the process.

  • Sensory-based approach: Also known as sensory-based learning, this method involves using all eight (yes, eight) senses to explore, make connections and learn. The mind-body connection facilitated through the sensory-based approach fosters skill development in a multitude of areas such as problem-solving, communication, and fine and gross motor functions.

  • Parent coaching: We recognize that you are with your child more often than we are, so we make it a priority to ensure that you feel confident in meeting your child’s needs outside of our office. Your therapist will provide you with tips and tricks, hand-outs, and tools and strategies for you to utilize at home in between sessions.

Our therapists are dedicated to supporting you and your child through the therapy process. We utilize these approaches to ensure that your child enjoys therapy and provide you with tools and strategies to support your child outside of our office.

Feeding Therapy

If any of the following sounds like you, then feeding therapy may be just what you’re looking for!

  • Your child has a limited diet and can be considered a “picky eater” or even a “restrictive eater.” They eat a handful of food items and the constant comments from other people about your child “only eating the same foods on repeat” are driving you crazy.

  • Your child is feeding themselves with their hands rather than utensils no matter how hard you try.

  • Chewing is difficult, making it so your child can only eat soft or puree food items.

  • Your child has difficulty eating specific food textures.

  • Meal times are stressful and not enjoyable.

Feeding therapy is not force feeding. We utilize sensory and play-based approaches to help your child create positive associations with food. Yes, you read that correctly, play-based approaches for feeding! By associating food with something other than constant pressure to eat each time it is presented, your child is actually more likely to want to engage with and eat food.

Gestalt Language Processing

What is Gestalt Language Processing?

Gestalt Language Processing is a language acquisition model that describes how children learn language by starting with whole phrases and then breaking them down into smaller units. Speech developed through Gestalt Language Processing includes echolalia, delayed echolalia, and potentially scripting with some type of significance tied to the productions.

What can Gestalt Language Processing look like?

Example: Your child might frequently say “to infinity and beyond!” when they are excited. Before knowledge of Gestalt Language Processing, you might think your child simply loves Toy Story and Buzz Lightyear. However, this is a prime example of a gestalt in the early stages. What your child has done is mapped the emotions of excitement, happiness, etc., onto the phrase that indicated something is coming next. Since your child does not yet have language figured out down to the word or phrase combination stage yet, they may use this phrase as a gestalt to communicate that they are excited, happy, and/or ready to play.

*** Each child’s gestalts are unique to them, which can make it challenging for family (even clinicians) to determine what the child is trying to communicate at first.

How can Speech Therapy help my child?

Speech Therapy can help your child develop their gestalts into self-generated language. This can allow them to more effectively communicate their wants and needs to those who do not necessarily understand the meanings behind their unique gestalts.
